MLK Day... the RBW way!

So I'm not going to do a traditional posts about all the things he did for the civil rights movement, and how he preached non-violence. Ya'll know by now that I'm crazy as hell anyway... so here it is... a couple questions, tidbits, comments that stick out in my mind when I think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Some people might get mad but so be it.

Why the heck does the holiday have to be on a Monday?
I mean why cant we just celebrate it on his real birthday. Some might argue for work purposes so that we have a long weekend, but we don't move Christmas around to a Monday. Not at all saying that MLK should be compared to Jesus Christ but a birthday is a birthday.

Why do black people (I'm saying us because I don't know if other races do this) go to the club to celebrate what Dr. King did for us? I swear I have gotten about 15 party invites for Sunday night and everybody and they mama gon be in the club since they don't have to get up to go to work on Monday. (But I aint bashing because I will be in there too, but I'm just saying...LOL)

Even though Dr. King was a big advocate of morals, and everyone doing what is right, he was dipping out on Coretta. Now ain't that a blip. Where were his morals when he was banging out the next chick, and he was a minister. Fornication was in the bible, but I guess he missed that scripture in between we shall overcome and preaching non-violence. He even had a de facto wife. Yeah, look that up.

OK... I guess that is enough of the bashing. No man is perfect and no matter what he did in his private life, that doesn't invalidate what he did when he was in public for the country and what he stood for. Without Dr. King, who knows where black people would be today. I may joke around but I am eternally grateful for what he contributed to this country.

I never knew he cheated on his wife. It's funny how we forget the faults of people we admire. We begin to make them larger than life when they are normal folk with issues like the rest of us.

Yeahhhh, I remember reading about him cheating on his wife. Which didn't surprise me. But homer is right. We tend to idolize people so much that we think they are perfect.

I completly feel your sentiments. His day should be celebrated on the man's birthday and I got a TON of invites on Facebook for MLK Parties. Um, really? I'm big on celebration of his life and contributions....that's why I'm in Atlanta now to go to the parade and reflect.

Yeahhh mon, and bein' here for Algebra don't hurt either

Peace to my favorite RBW! Enjoy your weekend.

I feel you about people using his birthday as just another day off. In the past, I've used it as a day of service and volunteered. This year I think I'm going to just rest.

As far as his cheating goes, even as a minister he is just a man. Not to excuse that behavior but like you said he wasn't perfect.

The thing that impresses me the most about him is how young he was doing all that work.

yeah, i read up on his infidelity. there's a book out about the other side of MLK that we don't know about. i appreciate that more, knowing he was a human just like the rest of us

just imagine a man being head of a congreagtion of thousands of people

having all of these women coming up to you talking about they want you to come up to their house for some private prayer

and you know how women feel about celebrities (you did a post about it lol)

you got to have the secret service to keep all that (you know what) from chasing you

and women love to brag

they would do anything to be able to say that they had him

i understand

don't agree with what he did, but i understand

James Tubman January 19, 2008 at 3:39 PM

A man is a man. Whatever extra curriculars he may have had don't diminish the importance of his work.

I trip out too, whenever I hear about MLK Day parties. It just seems... wrong. But if the strip club is open on Christmas, I guess they can be open on MLK Day too.

Eb, in 83, when they were trying to pass legislation honoring his bday, some opposition used the excuse that Jan. 15th was too close to Christmas/New Years so the 3rd Monday in January was offered as a solution to make sure it passed. In 94, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act to try and make it a day of service and giving back, not just a day off. I was on a committee at work that researched all of that and promoted service opportunties to the office.

Oh yeah, I've never cared about the stories of him cheating or dating white women because I felt that was between him and Coretta (and eventually God). I think he did what not many were (are) willing to do...put his life on the line for his beliefs. To me, that makes him a man who did great things, but never a perfect man. In this country, we have a habit of honoring people instead of the beliefs those people stood for. The belief and the fight should transcend the person and stay with us after he/she's gone.
