Athlete Groupies...

So I just finished a post on my sportz blog about Will Demp's view of the groupie and figured why not post something here about the extent of groupies. The whole thing made me think of a book by Brenda Thomas Threesome: Where Seduction, Power & Basketball Collide. Thomas was the personal assistant to Stephon Marbury for 5 years and explains their are 4 types of groupies:
  • The Gutter Groupies. These are the women who will wait outside the arena gates after a game and do anything, sometimes right there in the parking lot. If a player is feeling particularly chivalrous, he might let one service him in his Bentley. Gutter Groupies don’t spring for airfare and hotel rooms for NBA All-Star weekend. They won’t go that far to give a free blow job.

  • The Working Girls. The most prevalent category. Working Girls will bang a player if the opportunity arises, yes, but they won’t do just anything, and they don’t wait in parking lots. “They’re the ones reading In Style magazine but doing the Look for Less,” Brenda says. They’re mostly blue-collar, often from the hood, and more likely to be swept up by the “culture of the NBA” —which is to say, hip-hop—than by the actual game or the players. “They’re notch-in-the-belt party girls,” says Brenda, “who’d be happy with a fling with a bodyguard.” She pauses. “Basically, this is their hobby. Working Girls have a helluva lot more fun.”

  • The Fly Girls. These are the women who are just classy enough to merit a second encounter with a player. They might even get a piece of jewelry or a ride on the team’s private plane. To be a Fly Girl, you need to be toting real Louis Vuitton. “You also have to be really gorgeous,” says Brenda. A great many Fly Girls are often in denial, she says. “They refuse to see themselves as groupies. They need All-Star rehab or something.”

  • The Upper Crust. The stratospheric category of babe (see: Eva Longoria, Vanessa Williams, et al.) who might end up engaged or married (however briefly) to a player. The Upper Crust also includes women whose daddies or daddies’ lawyers can get them backstage with the players. They tend to be bony-assed white girls who may not marry the players—but won’t be left out on the curb, either.
  • So that's what Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson are.... Uppercrust groupies... I get it now...lol! and I guess Superhead started off as a working girl groupie and I guess you can say she has moved up to a Fly girl... Feel free to comment and add to the list everybody... call these groupies out!!!

I hate to admit though. I have had a groupie moment. I dont think its fair to call other people out and not spill my own dirt. When I was 19 I was so so in love with Jagged Edge. Well actually just Kyle aka Quick. At the time I was in college at A&T so I was living in NC. That summer they were touring with Mary J Blige and even though I was staying in Charlotte with my aunt for the summer I took a flight back home to Rochester for the concert. Stood outside the hotel until the wee hours of the night waiting for a glimpse of them. Never saw them. But I did meet Mary J. Blige bus driver and chilled with him and a couple band members on the bus. So we exchanged info and he promised me tickets to the show in Charlotte that was in about 3 weeks. So I just knew I was going to meet Kyle. This was "Let's get married" was big... so I got a t-shirt made with my face and his and on the back it read, "Kyle will you marry me?" I also bought a teddy bear for him. Our tickets were indeed in will call and we had seats that were close to the left side of the stage so when they came on that side they would be right in my face. When Kyle came to that side I lipped that the teddy bear was for him... He told me to throw it... He caught the teddy bear and started grinding it onstage. I thought I was going to die. Screaming like a damn fool. So of course there was an after party but I wasnt old enough to get in.. It was 21 & up. I wasnt one of them crazy groupies that was going to flirt with the bouncers to try and sneak in so i just waiting in front of the building until their tour bus pulled up. When the bus arrived this guy walks off the bus and sees me because I was standing right in front of the security. I was super skinny then so I squeezed my way in. The guy said "hey, arent you the teddybear girl?" I said "Yes, yes... can you tell Kyle I'm out here!!!" I was so excited. Kyle walks off the bus... pushes security out of the way to get to me and gives me the biggest hug and signs my t-shirt. I thought I was in heaven.

So that's my groupie story. I dont know if that was even being a groupie. I consider that being an avid fan. I had no intentions of sleeping with him, or trying to get him for any money. Just meeting him was enough, but I felt I had to tell my story. A year later I started working in radio and my whole perception on that world totally change. I instantaneously started looking at all artists like they were regular people after seeing them come threw the radio station. So now, I hardly ever get excited meeting any athlete or celeb. I honestly cant think of anyone that would make me act a damn fool now if I met them. I guess that comes with maturity... since I was only 19 when this happened.
I still have that t-shirt til this day... see the pic...lol
And here is a close-up of the signature. It says "Quick loves you"....LOL

that was one of the cutest posts i've ever heard

any brother that can make a woman as fine as you go crazy in his presence makes me insanely jealous

    Hi,

I really enjoyed that post. I worked in radio too, so I know exactly what you mean.

I remember so-called celebs coming through the station and it being not a big deal at all.

I've also seen the groupies in action and I think Brenda Thomas left out one type. That's the accidental groupie.

An accidental groupie is a woman who has no history of being a groupie. But at some point she has a chance encounter with a celeb and turns into a groupie for that particular star only. (She gets turned out)

Usually she snaps out of it before major damage is done.

LMAO @ that story!! I used to be like that over 112. i waited for them outside the union once to get pics and hugs (got both). they already had chicks who were tryin to be down in a more lurid way. it was never like that for me either. i was crunk over the pics and hugs. i thought demps was adorable but that story makes me melt.

Your story was the cutest! I've known a lot of celebs but couldn't do the groupie thing, had too much pride for that...but i do have some stories.

    Afrodite January 7, 2008 at 6:31 PM

Heeeeey! I used to work at a radio station and I feel you on treating celebs like they're regular people.

Eb the Celeb January 7, 2008 at 6:52 PM

@jameil - i think naturally we all have those.. I just dont get the girls that take it to that net level of being a groupie... actually I get it but it could never be me... and its extremely hard because I am a huge flirt... naturally... but something about being around celebs make me suck it up

@ mizrep- girl me too... and I got some stories too... some of the interns that were at the radio station... OMG... and the stuff I see in the sports industry... i am still shocked the lengths that chicks will go to get next to an athlete

@afro - you sort of have to or you get no respect. Especially with rappers, I had to give an evil eye to a couple of them... thinking I was going to be running all over the station getting them water and snacks and what not... I had to check a couple!!!
