Thought to Ponder : Reading is Fundamental

I've been slacking on my reading in 2008. It seems that time I used to spend reading I now spend blogging or reading blogs. I have a dozen books that I bought in 2008 that are sitting collecting dust and all are books I know I need to read. So I'm not really big on New Years Resolutions... but I do plan on reading all of them next year. So cheers to fitting in at least one chapter of a book per day.

Reading is sometimes an ingenious device for avoiding thought.
- Arthur Helps

To feel most beautifully alive means to be reading something beautiful, ready always to apprehend in the flow of language the sudden flash of poetry.
- Gaston Bachelard

I feel you on that. I had to pick up reading again because i somehow felt like i was getting dumber by not constantly exposing myself to new ideas.

This has always been my favorite quote.
"I think it makes God angry if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it"

it just strikes me

I try to read at least one book a month. Last month, I read 3. I love reading. And the library...FREE BOOKS!

I hear you on that one.. I haven't read a book in a minute. My bookshelf is filled with supposed-tos and need-tos...lol

It's like an addiction for me...usually I end up reading when I need to be doing something else...I absolutely have to read a book every week...how I find the time I do not know

Lately, I have not been able to really get into reading like I used to. As soon as I pick up a book, my eyes get all heavy and I just end up going to sleep. Maybe the books I'm reading are just boring...

I have been on a journey to break down the stereotype that brothas don't read and we don't read in public. I am currently reading a book by Nikki Giovanni called "the men and the women". It is good so far and I highly recommend it. Happy new year eb! Stay jazzy!

Sister - I'm in the same boat. The first thing to "go" or that I "let loose" is recreational reading when I find my schedule overloaded. I'm making a change in 2009! Thanks for the great blogs! Love your site RBW...

I so feel you on this..I've been blogging and reading other people's
blogs so much that I have been neglecting my reading of books.
I bought two books last week by two
of my favorite authors (Walter Mosely and Diane McKinney Whetstone)...Haven't turned a page in either of them yet.
Since I'm home until Monday..I'm going to try and read both of em in the next few days. Catch up on my magazine reading too.

I'm the same way. I recently just cleaned out my book case so I could see what books I need to read but I have yet to pick on up! lol

Reading is fundamental! I need to do more leisure reading.

I've tried...but being a narcoleptic and trying to read just don't work. I sleep on page 20 for about 10 months...then have to go back to 17 to remember what happened...then I sleep on that page....I end up reading backwards. Ok, I'm not really a narcoleptic, but I fall asleep like one.

You know I recently discovered that instead of reading books and the newspaper I am reading blogs, and I like it. I like keeping my ear to the ground and hearing what folks have to say. I can only read books snippets at a time. I've been on one for about a year, I know shame on me. Well, I am also reading books on tape with my kids and "to Kill a Mockingbird" with my seventh grader because I am a home school teacher, so I guess I read more than I think.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. I always have an audiobook on heavy rotation for that reason. You'd be surprised how much Twitter, Facebook, Blogging, etc. takes up so much time and away from actually writing. I feel ya girl! Happy New Year...Shine in '09!
