Harlem gets repped on BET

I love Harlem with a passion. I've lived in BK, lived in Jersey City, but no place has felt like home like Harlem, and its going to be great to see places I frequent on the regular on the national scale.

If you haven't heard, BET has a new reality series, Harlem Heights that shows young renaissance black people striving to make a difference in the world. Of course there has to be a little drama or no one would watch, but I'm really looking forward to seeing their stories revealed moreso than the drama. Its crazy to see all this playing out after a friend emailed me about the casting call about a year ago saying that me and my roommate would be perfect for it. I never went and tried out but its hilarious to see that 2 dudes I've been acquainted with through mutual friends are on the show. One in which I had a huuuuuuuuuugeeee crush on, but I won't divulge that information. Here's the trailer for the new series that premieres March 2nd.

I know we all bash BET on the regular but they are trying. Don't tell anyone, but I do watch Baldwin Hills... and I will be watching Harlem Heights. If nothing else is on, I will stop and watch Hell Date too.

This past weekend instead of airing ATL or Drumline, they aired Raisin in the Sun and the classic movie that I still love til this day, Sparkle.

They've picked up some of my favorite black sitcoms and even recently acquired the early episodes of The GAME (which by the way almost ensures the demise of that show if they have already put it in the syndication pool.)

So no matter how much I hate what the so called Black Entertainment Network has become, they are trying to change and innovate their programming and come full circle as far as the what the essence of what they were built on is concerned.

I also noticed that BET is trying to step their game up some. I watched all day yesterday as well and was pleasantly surprised with their movie selections.

Yeah, The Game is about to go bye-bye. Tear. I really like that show.

I hate Baldwin Hills (liked it better on MTV as "The Hills") but looking forward to Harlem Heights. Perhaps BET's version of MTV's "The City?" Lol.

Good ol' BET. I kinda wish they'd actually show videos like they used too.

Loving the hair sweetie. Obamazied and all. ;-)

I get so excited when I get to see "Sparkle"..lol...that's my movie.

BET is doing much better, but if they play "Two Can Play That Game" one more damn time, I'm going to have a few words with Debra Lee myself.

I will definitely watch Harlem Heights - I like shows like that and there are certainly not enough on TV like it. Plus it makes me realize that although I think my life is boring other people are doing big things in big cities. I wish I could but I have another mission in my tiny neck of the woods...

I'll be sure to watch "Harlem Heights" Yes..I'm enjoying "Presidents Day" even though I am at work. (I wasn't smart enough to take the day off.)
My Sipervisor is off and so is half my office..So I'm sitting here
reading blogs and writing future blog posts...and drinking coffee after coffee.

Thats crazy you should have tried out! I think you would have made the show if you did! But it looks interesting I will definetly be looking out for it, and you are right BET is trying to step their game up, you have to give credit where its due

A February 16, 2009 at 2:15 PM

They do try......

I like Baldwin Hills though, I wish there more episodes though shoot The hills will have like 20 episodes in a season and Baldwin Hills with have like 10...not even, unless it changed this season? lol

DrennaB February 16, 2009 at 3:14 PM

I don't believe yet that they're TRYING but I did hear about this show and if I remember, I'll give it a peek.

Ok, the Obamicon is too cute. I might have to do that one myself, lol.

I think having a new series on BET is cool, but I have to admit to getting tired of all this reality culture going on. I just wanna see some damn videos, or perhaps something educational, not saying that the lives of others don't have the ability to enlighten us, but man, I'm just saying... I'm so not feeling all the syndications they have going on now. Is this what BET will become? Just a channel that shows reruns of shows that are no longer on? Don't they already have channels for that sort of thing??

Diva's Thoughts February 16, 2009 at 5:00 PM

I actaully like BET believe it our not. They've never pretended to be anything then what they are...an entertainment station.

I tell you this, I will be watching this show.

ShellyShell February 16, 2009 at 6:27 PM

I hate to say it. Well, no I don't! I highly doubt I'll watch the show. BET has pissed me off so much that I don't even know what channel they are anymore! Scrolling the channels I did notice they had a Game marathon! I was pleasantly surprised but not enough to stay tuned for future shows. I tried to watch Baldwin Hills once and I couldn't take it for more than 10min.
I'll stick with Discovery, History, TLC and regular network stations! I've said my goodbyes to BET long ago and I doubt they can get me back.

hey Ill check out that episode...

nice pic of you girly!!

Malika February 17, 2009 at 12:35 AM

yeah, BET is stepping up their game. i think that they started to recognize that they lost the respect of black america and they were started to be regarded as an embarassment instead of an asset to us. THANK GOD. i can deal with syndicated shows and copycat reality shows before i could deal with degrading shows like uncut.

I've hated BET for a long time, but recently, they made me proud. I must say "American Gangster" is one of the best shows on tv. At first, I thought the last thing we needed was to put a spotlight on our criminals, but I "accidentally" watched it one day and was pleasantly surprised at how well the stories are told and love the fact that they do not promote violence or illegal activity...the show is almost like a warning to people watching it since none of those featured ever make it out alive or stay on top.

Their hip hop forums were shockingly done pretty well, too, and "Hell Date" cracks me up when I have nothing better to do.

I just might check this Harlem Heights situation out. BET loses me with their reality shows. They usually end up boring after the first 2-3 episodes.

Girl I have been waiting for this show to air.

Anonymous February 17, 2009 at 9:51 AM

Sha Boogie February 17, 2009 at 2:44 PM

I refuse to watch that station. hate it! Ever since they got rid of Tavis *smh*..

Charece February 18, 2009 at 10:59 AM

Hey I gotta check that one out...I hope its not as scripted as Baldwin Hills is.

wynsters the tigress February 22, 2009 at 8:05 PM
