Dilemma...gift for a man that aint ya man

OK... so next week is Semipro's birthday and I have no idea what to get him. We agreed to exchange gifts but it sucks extra bad because his birthday is 2 days before mine so most likely what I get him is going to dictate what he gets me. Ugh! It's hard because we have no labels. Met in December... he left for the season the 2nd week in February so we weren't really chilling too hard when he left. Had sex for the first time a couple weeks ago, and talk almost every night but we aren't a couple. We're just "kicking it" like Nina and Darius from Love Jones. You know, just enjoying each other's company without any pressures to take it further. So he isn't my boyfriend; so what the heck do you get a guy that is more than a friend, but not your boo for his birthday. I was thinking cologne. My homeboy has this and it smells incredible... but I wanted to get advice from the blog world on what I should do. I have to give him something that's good enough that I don't get a sucky gift in return, but he ain't my boo so I ain't spending no crazy dough...

Suggestions....

Cologne is a good look, safe choice, but you have to be sure that they like it. If he enjoys spa treatments a gift certificate is good too, or tickets to some sporting event that he enjoys (that may be expensive).

You get him what you want to get him. Don't get him something as a calculation of what he may get you or if it might say you care more. The gift then loses the purpose, in this case to show someone how you feel about him. So, get him something that is in your budget and that you think a friend will enjoy.

I have been involved in a no label relationship for over two years going on three (as a divorcee I am very slow to move to the next label) I call him my first right of refusal meaning I give him first rights to my time and if he refuses I move down the list but that is a blog for another day, not a comment. So anyway, if you think cologne meets your criteria get him cologne.

In the beginning I usta buy my First Right gifts for his children because he was always talking about and caring for them and I knew they were the most important thing to him. So I’d buy something he could give them, so he could see them smile. I know I’m crazy but he really liked that and said it was different.

Happy early birthday!

Girl.....

PLEASE... I have no clue -

What does he like wearing?
Shoes? Everyman loves some gymshoes.. right?

Cologne... hmm.. you have to make sure he would like it....

Good luck on that - make sure you tell us what you plan on doing!

Does he wear cologne? Think of the things he's into.

Anonymous May 6, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Wow... lets see... I'd say the thought counts. something you think he might like or just smile about ohhhhh eb got me this....

I mean what I would do is well i don't have one of those.. but i had a moment with a dude.. past tense... so i'd just add on to something i know he would need or want. that i can afford and not costly.

I appreciate the way OG thinks, but here are my notions on the matter, as well:

Men? We're pretty easy. A four-pack of premium imported beer, tickets to a Knicks playoff game...oh, wait...ammo for our pistol (no euphemism intended), ribs or steamed Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs (or ribs and steamed CBBC), some unusually enthusiastic and excellent head, new quality black porn, a fly tunic for summer, anything made by Under Armor, or that pet dolphin we always wanted. That's all I got.

Eb the Celeb May 6, 2008 at 10:55 AM

Yes he wears cologne... smells scrumptulous everytime I see him... and soft scents... the kind that I like... nothing overbearing or strong... and this frangrance is new so I know he doesn't have it and very soft.

Hell if I do go with it I feel bad because I am more so buying it for me...lol

Eb the Celeb May 6, 2008 at 10:56 AM

@Nupe - i hate you sooooo much you dont even know... but what would I do if I didnt have you to come over and spice up my life every day... I honestly dont know...

underarmour may be a good look though!

LMAO@ Nupe, that pretty much sums up a perfect B-day for a man.

But Cologne is a good idea, or maybe a watch if he's into watches.

B May 6, 2008 at 12:22 PM

I'm going to have to smell that cologne.

anonymousnupe May 6, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Eb, you transposed (by a couple places) the "e" and left out the "r" in "heart" in your message to me!

Ms.Seven Supa Sized May 6, 2008 at 1:14 PM

Keep it simple. Cologne is a safe choice.

RealHustla May 6, 2008 at 1:22 PM

I wouldn't want to be making him smell "incredible" if he wasn't going to be with me all the time, but I'm just paranoid like that. Get him a book, something that with a story that reminds you of yourself so that he can spend even more time thinking about you (get in his head a little). Send that with coupons for "favors" you'll do for him whenever he comes to visit to encourage him to visit more frequently. I'm just assuming that you want to get closer to him but I could be wrong.

Whatever gift you decide on, make it personal. Think back to convos ya'll have had and something he's mentioned that he might like. Is there a classic movie that he likes that he doesn't own? Not too give away all my secrets but for my ex, I got him the entire OutKast CD collection cuz his had gotten stolen and then another time, I got him the T-shirt from Ferris Bueller cuz that was a fave movie of his and he dug the shirt. Another gift was Common's first CD which was hella hard to find but he appreciated it. Still talks about it to this day and we've been sorta over for almost a year.

Long as its personal, you'll be straight but make sure it means something and you're not using it as a gauge for what he's gonna get you.

Smaragd May 6, 2008 at 1:44 PM

i'll go with the perf, thoughtful wivout being too personal... i guess! lol

E!! Good safe choice...HOWEVER..you ahve to be mindful that every thing doesnt smell the same on everyone.

I remember i had this one guy that wore Versace's Blue Jeans ..it was like an aphrodisiac...really got me going with a single HINT of whif of him wearing it. But then my next bf wore it and it made him smell like he had a jheri curl. YUCK!

But...nice choice nonetheless! Good luck!

TravelDiva May 6, 2008 at 3:34 PM

I think your first instinct is right. Cologne - it's not too expensive, personal, but not too personal, and sexy.

Still Patrice May 6, 2008 at 4:05 PM

if he's into video games you could get a gift certificate from Game Stop or something like thats.

shani-o May 6, 2008 at 4:52 PM

I like the cologne, too! Gifts for a guy that end up being about you too are a great way to spoil both of you...

dessex May 6, 2008 at 5:16 PM

Acqua Di Gio is that deal. I have a bottle, and the women love it lol... I have over 10 bottles of cologne...

you may also want to try Allure for men, Escape, Armani Code, and Enternity

Skoolboi Krush May 6, 2008 at 7:52 PM

I'm with Nupe on the enthusiastic head. Always a great gift! However, if that is not on your list, treat him to a nice meal and one of those lap dances that you are famous for.

Burberry cologne!

2 posts in one day?? Wowwwwwwwwwww

Rich Fitzgerald May 7, 2008 at 2:06 AM

Cologne is typical, you don't seem typical to me. I would go with a watch. Maybe a nice art print, if he's into that - it doesn't have to be limited edition or anything. Dinner at some place that is sexy, like a fondue spot. Cuff links, fly sunglasses summer is approaching). A gift that reflects something that you noticed about him that would make the gift unforgettable. It doesn't have to make a statement about any feelings, but don't go the typical route. If he is always smelling good, chances are he has the colognes he likes.

By the way - that Acqua Di Gio is nice. Got some too.

Yes you have visted my blog before, i believe 3 times now :). I love the outdoors so thanks for the love.

I think colonge is a safe bet, you could get a gift card. The AMEX kind.

One Man’s Opinion May 7, 2008 at 2:15 AM

Hope my response is not too late. First of all Cologne doesn't smell the same on everybody, in my eyes or nose. Second, you really have to be carefull when giving the gift of Cologne, unless it is ask for, but I see that I am the only person that feels this way. I think the best way to go is to get him something nice that will go inside of his house.

My pick?

Coochie coupons.

Sike(sorta).

I like the cologne idea or something sports related like memorabilia, a hat, or clothing since he's an athlete.
