How was my christmas day???
Hmmmm, I thought you'd never ask!

So this year was my first time spending Christmas alone. I went to bed a little after midnight at woke up at 8am to my phone ringing. It was my mentor Tap Money. Checking up on me to make sure I was OK since he knew I would be waking up to an empty apartment. Wasn't planning on being up that early but it was good to know that someone cared. So since he called I figured I'd go ahead and make the rounds. So I called my mom, grandparents on both sides, my great grandmother, and my god-daughter to wish them all the best. Then I got up and cleaned my entire house. It had been a while since I really had the time to get down and dirty to all the dust bunny crevices in the corners behind the couch and other such places that never see the light of day. I started my dinner around 2. Nothing big... just some steak and potatoes, corn, and salad. My homegirl Devin was going to have dinner with me since she also didnt go home for the holidays. She brought over some Strawberry shortcake and the booze. While eating we watched the color purple. Then we went to the computer and I let her listen to some new music that I am feeling. I swear we played the new Deitrick Haddon records probably 8 times in a row.

Then she wanted to play Nintendo Wii... she had never played before so it was hilarious. For the record I beat her in Bowling, Boxing, and Tennis multiple times. Then we decided to play Mario Party. We played that for about an hour then decided to go to the movies to see The Great Debators.
I am so not of fan of going to black theaters on opening nights or weekends. I know that's harsh to say... but we can be some real mofo's when we want to be. The movie unfortunately was only playing at 3 theaters in NYC... which really bothered me, but we'll leave that post for another day...but we ended up going to the Magic Johnson theater in Harlem. The theater was jam packed... it was the last show of the night... 10pm. Why oh why were there a million kids in the theater... I'm thinking... aint it past ya'll bedtime... Then this one lady put her 2 sons in the row in front of us and went and sat somewhere else... Do you know she came back over there about 4 times to talk to them. They were in the middle of the row so she's yelling across 4-6 people... Then she went to the concession stand and when she came back... wanted everyone in the row to pass all the stuff she bought down to her sons.

Next were the girls next to me... high school aged or they may have been freshmans in college. There were 4 of them. All heavy set girls... and nothings wrong with that... its just that they all had food... passing it back and forth over each other sharing.. making as much noise as possible with the wrappers... smacking and all. I couldnt believe it. Then there's a saying that Denzel has the students say over and over again at the lake. Do you know they started saying it the rest of the movie... It was like clockwork every 10 minutes they would say the whole phrase.

Then this man from the islands (dont know which one but he has a thick accent)... was sitting 2 rows behind me. Do you know this man answered his phone 4 times during the movie. I mean loud obnoxious ringtone, then answered the phone and didnt use his indoor voice, and actually held the conversations for at least 2 minutes everytime it rang. I couldnt believe it, and his girlfriend sat there and didnt say anything.

Then there is the corny stuff, like clapping everytime something touching or riveting happens. But they clap so damn long and loud that you missed whatever the next scene or line of the movie was.
But anyway...the movie was great and definitely gets and RBW endorsement. So for anyone who hasnt seen it, it is definitely a must see. Also I have a slight new little actor crush on Nate Parker who played Henry Lowe... Ladies, when you see the movie you'll know what I'm talking about... those lips... whew!!!
All in all... my christmas day was nice, relaxing, and I'm glad I took the time to experience what it is like to wake up christmas day by my lonesome.

So based on your post, I should be glad that I couldn't get to the theater yesterday. I kind of figured it would be good. I saw the episode of Oprah when the entire cast was on.
Girl, I know what you mean about Nate Parker. You should have seen him on Oprah. He is very easy on the eyes! ;-)
But I feel your pain about the movie theater a-holes. We saw Dreamgirls in Greensboro at the Carousel last year a couple of days after it came out and had to go through the same thing.
But hey, what can you do, some of us just don't know how to act sometimes.

You know us...we are emotional etc....we have to learn to respect each others space..I'll see the movie in the next couple of days...
being alone is not good....but sometimes productive...You still had a great Christmas...family,love, God..and good friends...daily
blessings to you...

I saw it last week as part of a special promotion here in Atlanta. There was lots of security because the three young actors (Nate, lil Denzel, and Jurnee) were in the building...so everyone behaved. Otherwise, I would have waited until next week and gone to the 10:30am matinee show.

Glad you liked it...Nate does have some serious lips. And glad you had a good Christmas; this was my first year spending it alone, too.

I'm glad you enjoyed your Christmas. I've spent a few away from my family as well. I'm right there with you regarding the movies. I seriously almost kicked some kids asses for repeatedly throwing popcorn when we saw one of the Tyler Perry movies on opening weekend. But on to Nate...YES!

Stumbled onto your blog quite accidentally and I don't recall ever reading of a more self-absorbed queen before. I'm just wondering what a "Renaissance Black Woman" is good for?

The Great Debaters is a really good movie. It's funny how the movies I call myself not really wanting to see, but end up being dragged to see, are always the flicks which turn out to be the best.

LOL...girl you should know better than to go to that theater. Whatever time you go, it is something crazy going on.

I stopped going there soon after it opened. I would love to support Magic, but I just can't deal with the shyt that goes on there.

Miss Snarky Pants December 28, 2007 at 11:48 AM

Nothing irks me more than a bunch'a ig'nant folk up in a movie theatre *SIGH*

Glad to read you enjoyed your Christmas otherwise. :-)

Saw it this evening, loved it. I live in TX (born and raised) and have never heard of the Wiley College debate team..and it featured the then young civil rights leader James Farmer, Jr. This movie is more than a feel good story...it's our history.
