Mahogany Butterfly

Hey everyone,

So I was blessed with the opportunity to write for Mahogany Butterfly.

My first article entitled Shape Shenanigans... which is my view on the new J-Hud album cover and how it relates to the self esteem of young African American girls.

If you want to check it out you can go HERE

I will probably post there a couple times a month... so check back sporadically.

Congratulations on the gig! You did an excellent job on the article. But I don't think the image thing is a Black issue but something ingrained in American culture. We may be strong women but, as a whole we aren't immune to the constant images of "perfection" constantly thrown at us. All we can do is teach our daughters/nieces/proteges/etc to love themselves.

BUT...I have to disagree with you on one thing. I'm pretty sure Halle Berry did music videos...R Kelly at that. It only takes one to succeed for everyone else to think they can be the next big thing.

You sure enlightened me... I had no idea halle did music videos... I'm hoping though that she was actually acting as the lead role and not shaking her ass

Eb the Celeb July 14, 2008 at 10:19 PM

@Dollface - hey just did a little research... yeah she did r. kelly's honey love video... but she had already done Strictly Business and Boomerang before doing that video... so the video did not land get her acting exposure. Kind of weird that she would even do that after she had already made it.

Good article.

I was disappointed when I saw J Hud's album cover. Its obvious it was photoshop. Her head looks too big for her body.

I never understood why video chicks say they do the videos to advance their career. What career are they aiming for shaking their asses? And I can't name one video chick who has become a breakout star. Supahead and Melissa Ford don't count.

There have been plenty of actresses who have been in videos after the fact. Melinda Williams was in Young Buck's video. LisaRaye was in a Master P video. So I don't find it weird that Halle did a video. But the difference is they weren't shaking their asses. Plus they are paid more. I remember LisaRaye saying she charges $15000 to appear in a video. I'm sure it has risen since this was years ago.

Congrats lil sis. You're on your way

Nice piece, Eb.

JHud's "girls" still look ginormous to me, but they clearly photoshopped her arms and waistline. I like the cover, but I would've liked it better untouched. We all know Sister Girl don't have a coke bottle shape like that. And she doesn't need to.

Congrats superstar, that was a great article. Wish you many more.

Eb the Celeb July 15, 2008 at 8:31 AM

@Southern Gal - Superhead and Mellissa Ford definitely dont count... they havent built a career for themselves... they just built temporary fame where 5 years from now no one will even remember there name

@Stew - your so inquisitive this week...lol...hit me on email

@Mr.B2B - thx man.. hit me on email

Thx everybody for the love... I want my space there to be more editorial than of course the craziness I have here, but still have a blog feel to it. I hope that happy medium doesn't cause some not to take me serious as a writer, but I don't want to come off so serious that it reads like an essay... so I am happy that you all can feel me.
