Sucked it up and went to SATC

DISCLAIMER - If you haven't seen the movie and want to then stop here because I go into detail.

Never been a huge fan of the show. I always felt Carrie was just so blah and melodramatic. Samantha was always my favorite character, and to me she is who brought life to the show (plus she always had the flyest gear, and a drink in hand...lol). But on to the movie. I had seen so many bloggers rave about their experience how they made it a ladies night out and that they cried and laughed and cried again. Well tomorrow I will be writing a post about being just one of the guys because I was not feeling any of those emotions and the film was just "OK" to me. Me and Joy literally sat in the theater calling out what was going to happen next and were right every time. I hate movies that are blatantly predictable.

For me Charlotte was the most real and the best character. I did almost cry from laughter when she ripped BIG apart after canceling the wedding. I have never seen her mad before and her facial expressions warrant at least a MTV Movie Award.

Damn at Samantha turning 50, but I loved how she lived her life. She wasn't afraid to let that man go even though she knows she is getting up there in age. She also showed growth by not sleeping with Dante. Whew @ Dante. I can't believe they really showed his manpart and she turned that lovely looking specimen down.

Miranda reminds me a little bit of me. I am not nearly as cynical about life and love but when a guy f*cks up it does take me a while to let him back in if I ever do. Seeing her approach changed a little bit of me. I know that in that situation I would not have been as hard on my husband. I mean the man was damn near crying (which irked the ish outta me) every damn time he saw her. I mean that is a bit much, I don't want a man that damn sensitive. But I felt his pain because he really loved her and came to her when she may have never known. I'm glad they were able to reconcile. On to BIG... I don't even know if I really want to speak on him. I knew before I even walked in the theater that there wasn't going to be a wedding. How would they be able to keep you engaged in a movie that is 2 1/2 hours if there had been a wedding. I just can't believe that when Carrie saw him in that closet after 6 months of not speaking that she just ran up to him and kissed him. Hell to the nawl. I would have cussed him out all kinds of ways, and then kissed him. Actually it wouldn't have even gotten to that point because after I whooped his ass in the middle of the street the day of the wedding (yes whooped his ass and not just bopped him over the head with some flowers), I would have given him the chance to speak. She just got in the car and drove away. If she had given him the chance to speak she would have known that he just had a couple last minute jitters and that he was ready to do the damn thing. And then they would have gotten married. But if that had happened then there would have been no Jennifer Hudson. For real though, they couldn't find a better name then "Louise" to call her. That is an ugly name. J-Hud's performance did nothing for me. I mean her character had it's purpose but I just felt anyone could have played that part. Alright I guess that's enough of Eb the critic.

Now on to the girlie stuff, the clothes in the movie were to die for. Carrie's style isn't the flyest in my eyes (what the heck was the ripped up shirt she had on when they were packing) but her shoe game, even running in the snow to Miranda's house on new years, were on point. Hands down Samantha had the bet outfits as a whole throughout the whole movie. Except when she had that big hat on her head and was peaking looks at Dante. That was hilarious but that thing was hideous.

Anyway... I'm so over the girlie talk... tomorrow I will highlight my top 3 guys friends to get some testosterone flowing over at RBW, because ultimately this movie made me feel like I'm a tom girl that likes to wear heels.

I have a weird feeling I'm going to get suckered into seeing this movie. Doesn't sound that bad though. I had seen a couple episodes when it was on HBO.

I have no desire to see this movie. I'll see it when it comes out on DVD.

Jazzy June 4, 2008 at 11:07 AM

I caught it on bootleg...and I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

It was aiiiiiight...but nothing I want to watch again.

Calling that hat hideous is an understatement!! Ugh!

Brown Girl Gumbo June 4, 2008 at 11:23 AM

If I do see this movie it will be on TV via cable or a DVD.

I didn't read your review because I know that I probably will see it eventually, even if it is years from now! LOL :-)

Great review—and exactly what I had anticipated the movie to be about. So no, I refuse to be suckered into seeing this, but will catch it on DVD. LOL!

I kind of want to see the movie even though like you I didn't keep up with the show all the time.
But you basically summed it up for me so I don't have to really waste my time.

LMAO @ tom boy in heels!!! hahahaaa

Review on point but I LOVED it!

Nothing wrong with being a tom girl in heels...I get more excited about a big time football match up...let's say UT vs. a&M, than I would about a movie...especially SATC. I followed the show, enjoyed the show, but never thought there was enough to take it to the big screen.

Carrie and Big always said they were not the marrying kind, so without seeing it, I knew they would not get married.

I still might see it, then again, I might just wait until it comes out on dvd.

Charles June 4, 2008 at 3:02 PM

I'm not excited to see that movie at all...I might catch it on DVD...

I maybe own all seasons of the show though on dvd...I can't confirm nor deny that...

Diva's Thoughts June 4, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Ok, I must tell you.....I could not wait to see the movie!!!! I waited 2 years and dammit I saw it on Friday night and was not diappointed.

I am a HUGE fan of the TV show so I knew I would love the movie. My co-worker who never saw the show went to the movie with me and loved it as well.

I will definitely see it again! lol

As soon as I saw the previews I knew that there wasnt gonna be a wedding...it just doesnt happen that way.

Anyway, I might still see it cause it will be an excuse to get all my girlfriends together..well maybe we will go out to a club instead lol

Freedom In Christ June 4, 2008 at 7:22 PM

I really enjoyed this film. It was the story of a beautiful friendship between 4 women that have been thru thick and thin with and for each other. And, had each other back! And was brave enough to admit that made mistakes.

To me, the theme of film that was highlighted the most was FORGIVENESS!

We all must do this in order to led and maintain healthy lives with self, others and God. We all say and things out of anger or fear.

Sometimes when people say "I'm Sorry" they really do mean it.

SATC was totally predictable but I loved it anyway. For the fashion alone I would see it over and over again. Now I usually hate Samantha's wardrobe...too 80's, too retro, too severe, but they hooked her up in this movie.

I think the whole blogosphere is in agreement...J. Hud sucked.

p_nami June 4, 2008 at 9:19 PM

It was ok.

But if you like the fashion the book SATC: The Movie just came out and it has every single outfit each of them wore along with the designer.

Miss Snarky Pants June 4, 2008 at 11:19 PM

Been hearing a lot about SATC in recent days...

[Personally, I've never watched it when it came on TV so I damn sure wouldn't consider shelling out any dough to see it in theaters.]

I grew up as a woman during sex when it started I was in my mid 20's and it let me know all the boy talk and frankness I was having with my home girls was perfectly fine, not slutty. It let me know that it was nothing wrong with wanting to get your rocks of or having more partners than your age, especially if you between the ages of 30-35 as long as you are safe and doing that is what YOU want to do. It taught us about judging as women and how we all need friends.

I think for me the movie was a grand ending to a show that changed the life’s of so many young women with out even knowing it. Before SATC women felt some shame in owning their sexuality. I was the first show that showed women being 30 plus and single was not the end, more so for our white sisters, but still It taught women to be happy with who they were and live their lives. Those themes that we see today were not so prevelant in life in 1998, not like they are today.

I went to the movie expecting disappointment, mostly because the finale disappointed me, because well they all ended up with men and no character explored the life of choosing to be single and not feeling or behaving like a spinster or being bitter. The movie did redeem that for me. As far as predictability it’s a movie based on TV show I expected to know what happens in the end kinda like when I knew Ricky was gonna die in Boyz in the Hood when I saw Ice Cube doing a interview on TV promoting the movie.

The movie did also make me do some more thinking about how I wear my singleness almost as a badge honor, like look at me I’m single and happy!! and while I love it there is NOTHING wrong with being in a pair.

I think you may have inspired a blog on how SATC changed the game in so many ways for women in your age group. I mean I guess its how my mom probably felt about Julia or Mary Tyler More changing the game for me. If Oprah identifies with Mary I most certainly identify with Carrie. She is awkwardly pretty and not afraid to march to her own beat. She seems to be the eb to the other flow, she keep Miranda from completely falling of the cynical edge, she helps Charlotte be edgy, and she corals Samantha from going over the deep end!

Good post! Thanks for the inspiration!

Told some girls in class that I had never seen an episode and she looked at me like I had one eye and three boobs. Not every chic can relate to 4 white chics living in NYC.

Thanks for the synopsis cuz I wasn't going to see it! Will catch it when it hits On Demand.

I was curious about the gear they were wearing though. Figured they'd be on point there.

CC Solomon June 5, 2008 at 2:54 PM

Loved the movie, aren't you excited about the rumored sequel being a reality (sike, I know you could care less). I have to agree Samantha had the best wardrobe hands down and really made the show although I really like Charlotte and can relate the most to her. It was a fun time though...

The F_Uitlist June 5, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Hmm I think you got something out of the movie even though you were calling out the plots frontin like you weren't paying attention. HAHAH

Miranda's hubby has always been that way! I thought her story line was actually the realest of them all. It really does go down like that when yo u are a working mom, and dad. I haven't experienced the cheating aspect but I know all the other feelings, I don't think I would be as crude and say "can we just get it over" but yeah it can be like that sometimes.

SMH at Tom girl that likes to wear heels, you're just a woman a complete well rounded woman. I too love sports (i just don't do football because I don't understand it)/ hanging with my boys and I am a girly girl by some standards.

MP June 6, 2008 at 9:18 AM

I agree with you about J-hud's performance. She shouldn't have even been in the movie at all. Her character simply didn't blend!

Just_Wondering June 6, 2008 at 1:11 PM

I thought the movie served the purpose of letting us see our favorite characters again. I thought it was interesting that after BIG had been around the block a few times getting married that he didn't shouldn't her already know to get down on one knee to ask her to get married.

I was a bit disappointed about Samantha's character because in my opinon she broke up with her Boo because she missed NYC. I think if he relocated she would feel like she had her old life back and let someone else manage him. But that's just my two cents lol

Brionne June 6, 2008 at 4:24 PM

WOW!! I really didn't think there were any women in the world who weren't completely ecstatic about seeing this movie... guess I was wrong :-/

I abso-fucking-lutely LOVED this movie!!! I was kinda mad at how she jumped back down with Big so quick, but other than that... LOVED IT!!!

MzVirgo June 8, 2008 at 10:33 PM

I'm still debating on if I should see this movie. I think maybe I will wait for the DVD to come out. 2 and a half hours!!!??? sheesh.

CapCity June 9, 2008 at 4:13 PM

not that i had any desire to see this movie - but i did hear it makes nyc look fabulous & i luv seeing this city in movies (have since Annie Hall! LOL!). So, thanx 4 saving me a bunch of money at the box office! ;-)

Anonymous June 9, 2008 at 8:16 PM

I am an avid SATC fan and I too was predicting what would happen next.... I was a bit disappointed with that, but the fashion made up for it!

As for the Big/Carrie drama at the "wedding," she blew up at him because of all the mess he has put her through in the past. The man wouldn't say he loved her, never introduced her to people, randomly came into her life when he felt like it, etc. He is the archetypal man. (Now that I said all of that, I'm not sure why I rooted for them to get back together. Sucker for love I guess...) Good synopsis of the movie though! Tom boy in heels = me too!

Chari June 10, 2008 at 10:01 PM

Man I loved that movie! Man you are better than me, cause I would not have wanted to hear A THING Big had to say!!

But she doubted him anyway cause she said I knew you were going to do this to me. So they needed the time away to appreciate each other.

And the shower scene!! ha ha! That is a first for me I think. Way to go Samantha!

Oh yeah, I would have been mean just like Miranda. That's just me...

Good post.

Miss Lovely June 13, 2008 at 3:13 PM

I never really watched the show and went more for the fashion than anything else..and I was not disapoointed. It kinda just depressed me to know that I can't afford 525 heels :( ....YET.
