Renaissance Black Men

I don't know what it is... I am just really loving men right now... maybe its the fact that we are on the brink of Father's day, or maybe because we are just in the midst of so much greatness when it comes to black men. Barack Obama wins the Democratic Nomination!!! Never in my lifetime did I think that we could have the possibility of having an African American president. I thought maybe my kids would live to see it but just couldn't fathom it happening in my lifetime. It's funny because I never really thought of my generation as having anything to contribute to the history books. What are we really known for that has a substantial impact on history besides having Denzel and Halle be the first African American to win Best Actor and Actress; we hadn't really had anything that elevated us as a people, and now because of Barack and Michelle we do. This right here says it all... a change is really about to come, when we are giving pounds on a podium instead of a hand shake or hug, I am extremely excited about the things that are to come and I have never been a fan or excited about anything dealing with politics.Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Laurence Fishburn on Broadway in a one man show called Thurgood. Amazing performance on his part. Its really hard to keep an audience engaged for 90 minutes and you're the only person on stage. Quite frankly it boggles me that a person can remember that much of material but I guess that's why he makes millions acting and I am sitting here blogging about it for free. Anyway, his performance was both witty and endearing. He even showed a bit of his real personality and called someone out that walked in 30 minutes after the show started which was hilarious. If you happen to be in NY and want to see a great broadway show for cheap do consider this. For more info you can go HERE.Then this morning I had the pleasure of hearing Russell Simmons speak at a Digital Advertising conference. He is so extremely smart, and yet so down to earth. He laughed and he preached, and even presented ideas directly on the spot which shows you how much he is on the grind and constantly thinking of ways to elevate the culture of Hip Hop. One thing that he said that really resonated to me was that "a good leader is a servant first." It's funny how in life everyone wants to be the boss, or their own boss, and I have always been one of them. Knowing that I wouldn't be working for the man forever, and then I have so many young entrepreneurs around me that are making things happen and that drives me even more. Although that statement made me realize the way I have handled certain situations in my past. Things that I may have considered ass-kissing at the time (something I refused to do) may have just been a point in my life that I was suppose to be the servant. So for the young professionals out there, don't be afraid to be the servant first.

I LOVE BLACK MEN!!!

I really do. I know I may give them crap at times here on RBW but I really do love you... more than any other kind of man. The wonderful ones that I have in my life make me better. The ones who are well off that I see raising thousands of dollars for foundations and the bettering of our community. I love you! The ones that are raising their children and in their lives, the ones who are in the Big Brothers programs and volunteering at the recreation centers. The ones who coach the local pop warner leagues with no pay. The ones whose blogs influence a crazy chick like me on the daily. I love you all!

Obama and Michelle make me SO DAMN proud. I do think our generation has left a mark in the history books but more on the entertainment side of it. Though Hip Hop as a culture is historical, Its a part of EVERYTHING whether good or bad. But now our kids can learn about the a man who changed the world in the culture that was the majority. Truly inspiring. But folks have to keep up the momentum!

I want to see Thurgood so bad! I just keep running into free days and sold out tickets. But I love Laurence on broadway, and in shakespeare plays. I just adore him and he is so slept on.

I am trying to like Russell again, I definitely respect him as a business man but I don't like some of the things I have heard him say in defense of Hip Hop, and after that tour with DeBeers. I was a bit done with him. I do love that he practices yoga and that quote is a definite sign of that. I'll try again

Pounds on the podium! lol I love that picture. We as a people are making history and I love it. I give so much credit to all the black men living above the stereotypes and giving the younger black men footprints to walk in.

Lina June 6, 2008 at 8:57 AM

Awww, sweetie, that was the most encouraging thing I have heard. More Black men need to read it. Oh, I love my dudes, and the ones trying to do something, and the ones thinking about trying to do something (cause they need love too). This is great, darling.

anonymousnupe June 6, 2008 at 4:03 PM

So, Eb, exactly how many black men do you love at the same time?

And Simmons didn't attribute the quote about being a servant first? Why black folks always stealing depth from the Bible and then wanna ack like they just spewed it themselves?

Have a good weekend, E. Miss you. I had more to say, but my black man boss keeps harping on this work thing.

Chris June 6, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I was SO going to say he stole that from the Bible too...

BTW I posted those Indian Tear commercials too...I don't know how I remember them when they came out in the 70's.

La June 6, 2008 at 5:00 PM

I got the chance to hear Russell speak once and was completely blown away by how articulate and intelligent he was. He is so quiet most of the time, but he really is quite a large character.
