What the heck is up with everyone
trying not to be BLACK!

First Keke Wyatt comes out and says "She really doesn't consider herself black because she's only 25% black" and considers herself more indian; and now Beyonce wants to be latino. I knew something was up, first the song Beautiful Liar with Shakira, and then she does an entire Spanish album. In a recent interview with Latina magazine she is quoted as saying "I'm just jealous that I wasn't born Latina. I wish I had been because the culture is so beautiful." Now I understand wanting to be cultured but do you have to abandon your own culture in the process. I dont want to alienate any of my fellow RBW's, but us Chocolate sisters usually don't have this problem. I thought we had gotten past this point of good hair / nappy hair, House negro / Field Negro mentality but I guess not. How do you my fellow RBW's feel?

I do not think that Beyonce was denouncing her Blackness when she made her comments in Latina. It sounds more like she was just giving props to Latin culture. I think it's great that she's expanding her music to reach out to other cultures. I mean, home girl has done songs with numerous black rappers and producers (Jay, Ghostface, Slim Thug, 50 Cent, Swizz Beats, Timbaland etc). Does she get her black card snatched for one collabo with Shakira?

There was similar talk when Tiger Woods explained his multi-cultural background. Black folks got all up in arms saying "He don't wanna be black." Maybe, just maybe the man didn't want to disregard the lineage of his CLEARLY NOT BLACK mother. If Keke Wyatt wants to identify herself as more Indian, why are we mad at that? That's her business. Why do black folks have to claim ownership of every person in the world with melanin and a wide nose?

I don't think beyonce was denouncing her race.. and wanting to be Latina.. nor do I think KeKe Wyatt was wrong in identifying her multicultural background.

To each his own.. and as for chocolate sisters.. I have 2 friends who are biracial who just happened to have a white mother and black father.. they identify with BOTH sides and NEITHER looks mixed.. you would never believe that was their mother but are they to NOT identify or acknowledge that side of their heritage??? I don't think so.

I understand your opinion on the articles you read BUT we have to take a step back and realize it isn't always about COLOR..

I guess I just didn't take B's comment that literally. I tell folks all the time that I wish I was Jamaican so I can do some of that hip winding that seems to come second nature to them ;-) That don't mean I don't like being my regular black self, though.

LOL @ skinny you got some yankee gals that can whine better than the caribbean ones.. :)

Ok.. umm Ebonne I see your point but lets agree to disagree.. I don't think Beyonce denounced her blackness I just think she is "fascinated" with the culture and you already know she isn't the most verse one in the bunch.. LOL

I’ve studied the Spanish culture, it’s actually very interesting. Not that I would want to change mine, if that’s what you are implying Beyonce said.

Ya'll are off the hook! But to the Beyonce dilemma, I'd like to know what the question was that led up to that answer.
A friend of mine taught English to some students in France and they got into a discussion about whether or not Beyonce is black and she said those kids were baffled. They didn't know if she was black or not.
I think what happened in her situation is she was trying a little too hard to impress folks.
As far as Keke Wyatt, I don't have any comment about that. And to comment on your about us being past the point of "good hair / nappy hair, House negro / Field Negro," we're not. I mean, just because you and I are, we can't expect everyone else in the world to be.
