Just one of the Guys...

Anyone remember this '80's movie. One of my favs growing up. I even upgraded recently and bought the DVD at Walmart and trashed my VHS. I mean they had it for $4.44 so how could I not pick it up.

Many people cant even fathom that I have never been on a "real date" before and I am 27 years old. When I tell them that they seem to think I am lying... so I then have to explain. By "real date" I mean something outside the typical dinner and a movie. I have been on too many of them to count... but I'm talking about something that isn't typical. Something that was meaningful or special. Then I thought about it and I have been on plenty of dates... just none with someone I was intimate with or interested in . I have been on dates with my homeboys. I have eaten at the finest restaurants, went to football and basketball games having the best seats, broadway plays, concerts, the list goes on... and all those great moments have been shared with some of my best guy friends. I even remember having conversations with a couple of them that if we didn't get married by a certain age we would just suck it up and marry each other... because I truly have that much fun with my boys.

I am not the typical girl. I am truly one of the guys. They know they can talk to me about anything... and that I will tell them like it is, and even though I may be saying the exact same thing that their girl is telling them, they are more open to listen to me because they know that I am not saying it with a notion to control them (like some of us women do.) I have got them threw the family deaths, the break-ups and make-ups, the baby momma drama, and going back to high school was the only tutor out of many that was able to get my best friend to get what he needed on his SAT's to get his scholarship to Nebraska.

Aaah... this post is making me tear up a bit because I truly love my guys. They have been the ones who have checked me when I may have been on the verge of messing up a good thing with a good guy, and were the same ones that scolded me when I was putting up with bull from a guy who wasn't worthy. They keep me grounded and I am forever grateful that God put them in my life. They know me better than anyone in this world probably, and I know I can depend on them for anything, anytime, any place, and they know they have the same of me.

I have quite a few guys in my circle but I gotta highlight the 3 that are the most special to me.

1. My mentor Tap $. You don't even know the half of the gratitude of everything you have been to me. Back in college when I needed a way into this crazy industry you took a chance on me and I will be forever grateful for that. You showed me the ropes, you are the reason I am so tough and have been able to survive what so many have not been able to handle. You always had my back no matter what and you opened my eyes to so much. I had mussels for the first time with you. I remember I wouldn't try any new foods that I hadn't grown up on and ordered the same thing every time we went out. You really made me elevate myself on so many levels, I truly don't know where I would be now if I didn't have you in my life so early in my career.

2. The Big Brother that I never had, CL. You inspire me to no end. Your a millionaire now boy and I am so proud of you. The highlights in Black Enterprise, and all the copy cat companies that have tried to start because of your success truly shows that you are a trend setter. When I see you, you give me hope that all my dreams can come true and that Jonesin' Enterprises is not too far fetched. I remember you starting that business in your small 2 bedroom apartment in harlem and me coming over and basically living there when I first moved to NYC helping you out with stuff. You really took me under your wing when I got to this beautiful, crazy city that has eaten many alive and showed me the ropes. You always bring me down to earth when Crazy Eb tries to peak her head out and I love you for that even though at the time she may cuss you out... but you know how she do...lol. I envy your spontaneity and love when you call me 5 min before a game comes on and say "Eb, lets go to the bar on so and so and watch the game. I am on my way now to get you." Knowing damn well I'm gon need more than the 15min it is going to take you to get to my crib for me to get ready. Needless to say, I make it happen and have never kept you waiting. You truly are the big brother that I never had!

3. Last but not least, my boy NateDawg. We've only known each other what... 3 years.... met on a cruise in 2005 and immediately clicked. You have such a sweet spirit, and a kind heart, and you really deserve the best type of woman the world has to offer. You are a romantic and I love you for it and I know you will find that special lady someday. I have brought joy in exposing you to new things as my mentor and adopted big brother were to me. The Cowboys game in Philly... where we almost got kicked out the stadium...(yes blog fam he is a Cowboy fan too...and Philly fans are just as crazy as they lead on to be) but all in all it was a good time... being able to hook you up with tix to your first broadway play. They have all been just as a blessing for me being able to make you smile, as I am sure they have been for you. We just went to Summer Jam together this past Sunday. (If anyone wants to read my review of Summer Jam you can go here) You stay fly as hell all the time and always have the best advice on gifts for men whether its my dad for father's day or my current boo. You constantly remind me of life's simple pleasures and what I have been blessed with when I sometimes lose sight and I thank you.

Also gotta give a shout out to my blog guys... I won't put you on blast but you know who you are, and that you are dear to my heart even though we don't really know each other, I feel that we have for years!

FIRST

I gotta say that you are one of the guys...but that ain't a bad thing. You know more about sports than a lotta dudes. That doesn't make you one of the guys, tho. Its your persona. Life of the party type chick. Ride or die chick. Put gas in ya tank type chick (lol)...you get my point.

You are chick that most dudes would wanna hang with...despite the fact that you're an Aggie. LMAO!!! Juss kiddn

Great post Eb!!

Nice of you to highlight how much you appreciate your men friends/family.

Every now and again, it's good to let em' know how much you care :-)

Mizrepresent June 4, 2008 at 11:27 PM

Eb, that's so cool, but you are just that cool type chick, who's fun, hilarious and you are bound to have a good time with...i did. I have a few old male friends, and we are down like that, we hang, we hang pretty hard, the only problem i can't get a date with them around...folks be thinking they are my man, just because we get along so well. It's all good though, i so love my friends, and they love me back, so i feel ya!

First, I LOVE the movie Just One of the Guys (making a mental note to see if I can find it at WallyWorld for $4.44)...for real it's probably one of my favorites from the 80s.

Second, it's so funny that you wrote about your guys because I was thinking about doing a similar post because I, too, love my guys! I have a core group of them who have gotten me through so much drama and know me better than I know myself at times.

Having friends of the opposite sex is always important to help you understand a different point of view. I know I love my female friends because without them I'd never understand women lol

Lina June 5, 2008 at 8:48 AM

Awwww....thats so sweet. I love men friends, and I have a bunch. Beyond having the opposite point of view, they are more laid-back than females, and they tell it like it is, even when you don't want to hear.

Great post.

Lina out.

Nothing wrong with being one of the guys, you should consider it an honor that your fellas trust you as much as they do. "It's a secret society, all we ask is trust..."

Vixenlibra June 5, 2008 at 10:56 AM

AWWW! That was so heartfelt. Especially since im extra sensitive and emotional this a.m. That is a wonderful feeling to know you have so much support and love right? I love what I could see of that black dress!

Eb, we are sisters from a 'nother mother. I'm am "just one of the guys". My guy friends are very special to me. I learned ALOT about guys because of them. Dudes sometimes can't take it because I throw their sh^t back in there face. Sometimes I feel like I know them better than they know themselves. lol I'm not the typical girl. I've been called a double-edge sword.

After getting with my child's father, I sort of had to fall back a little because he didn't get my relationships with them. I always say people who don't have a platonic relationship with someone from the opposite sex won't understand. Some of my best days have been spent with my guy friends. And I just love how they put me up on game when I would be putting up with bull from some dude. I can't wait till my bday when we will all be back together again. And I was also lucky to have a few friend girls who are too "just one of the guys".

I never went on a "real" date til I was 25 when I meet my child's father.

This post made me smile, Eb. :)

EB, You are FAB!

My bestfriend on the entire planet is a Man! He has been my bestest friend for 20 years! So I feel you on longstanding friendships!

Kudos to you for celebrating your friends!

1/3 June 5, 2008 at 3:46 PM

aww this was a sweet post eb! I have a group of guy friends who mean the world to me too. Just cause you hang with the guys doesnt make you one of them like kyle said.

Its great to celebrate friends:-)

TravelDiva June 5, 2008 at 4:15 PM

I could see you being one of the guys. I loved that movie by the way. It's one of those guilty pleasure movies.

Chris June 5, 2008 at 5:05 PM

Wow...no "real" dates, eh? Stick it out...you'll get one soon enough. As for the post about your guys...I wish I could see in print that type of thing for me...it made me shed the strong man tear for you...like the Indian in that litter commercial from the 80's. What you know about that?

Darius T. Williams June 5, 2008 at 5:08 PM

I love the pics...and um, which blog gys are you referring to???Huh? It had better be me. And um, that movie - nah, ma, I don't remember it.

Anonymous June 5, 2008 at 5:40 PM

The F_Uitlist June 5, 2008 at 9:01 PM

GREAT post! I was really all teary reading and I don;t even know you like that. But I get all choked up when I see real friendships bragged about.

I too have a lot of make friends (I work in a male dominated industry) and no matter what they have always been there for me and its the best feeling ever. One guy even threatened my hubby two years ago when we were going through it Now that's LOVE!

Eb the Celeb June 6, 2008 at 8:59 AM

@Mizrep - you know that means a lot coming from you right...

@Lauren - go ahead and do a similar posts... it feels good to highlight the men in our lives that keep us grounded

@Chris - SMH at you quoting Jay-Z, where all the philosophers...lol

@vixenlibra - yes it is

@southern gal- glad it made you smile, I have had a few go to back for me before too

@OG - going to check out that post

@chris - a strong man tear? OK... glad it touched you so... and I know nothing about the commercial you are referencing

@darius - you know I dont take to kindly to threats right? but yeah after that rat posts that gave me probably the best blog reading laugh I've had in a while... yes that means you qualify

@f list - I work in a male dominated industry as well so I feel you. Funny though that I havent met any of them in that industry. They all before. Either way they love to brag at the fact they have a sista that does what I do since its so rare. So I get cool points with all the guys.

KIKI June 6, 2008 at 1:34 PM

I feel the same way Eb; I'm just one of the guys. 95% of my friends are men and I think they are absolutely great. But, I've also found that I've started thinking ALOT like them...and I dont know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe I have too much testosterone filled influence...

kayellejaye June 9, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Nice post.

I've always been one of the guys. I love my girlfriends, but there's nothing like seeing the good in men from someone you can truly call a friend.

Just One of the Guys was one of my fave flicks too.

Afrodite June 12, 2008 at 1:57 PM

I miss having guy friends. I'm so used to having a close unit of girl friends that I completely forgot that I don't have anymore guy friends.

Sigh...
